Nathan Mavila scored a late penalty deep in injury time to ensure Cavalry FC drew 2-2 with 2019 CPL champions Forge FC in the opening game of the Canadian Premier League’s Island Games Thursday. The 35-game tournament replaced the league’s original 2020 season after it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March.

Cavalry FC began the stronger of the two sides and took a deserved lead when defender Dominic Zator opened the scoring at the Island Games, heading in a corner in the 11th minute. But Anthony Novak equalized for Hamilton’s club in 26th minute taking advantage of poor Cavs defending. The first half ended 1-1.

Forge FC began the second half strong and Kyle Bekker gave them the lead with a fine header with 19 minutes left, after more questionable Cavs defending.

Bekker’s goal looked as though it was going to be enough to claim the three points for Forge FC. But Cavalry FC found a lifeline when Dominic Samuel had the ball strike his hand in the penalty area in the 93rd minute.

Cavs fullback back Mavila stepped up to slot home calmly to ensure the points were shared.

Cavalry FC next play Winnipeg’s Valour FC Sunday. And Forge FC plays FC Edmonton the same day. Every Island Games match can be seen on OneSoccer.ca.
