York United comfortably beat League1 Ontario champions Masters Futbol Academy 5-0 in the Canadian Championship to advance to the quarterfinals Saturday.
York ran rampant over their visitors, overwhelming them with 26 shots and 11 on target. The hosts will face Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC in the next round of the national championship in September.
Loading ...The home side deployed a high press throughout the match, continually winning the ball back in their opposition’s half leading to wave after wave of attack. York could have had even more goals had a couple of shots not bounced off of the woodwork and a few more drifted wide of gapping goal.
“We said at the beginning we’ve got to make sure we take control of this game,” said York United head coach Jim Brennan after the match. “Often you’ve seen in cup matches, especially one-off games, they’re banana skins so we had to make sure we put a professional performance tonight and I felt we did all over the park.”
York United is now four games unbeaten in a great stretch of form and will be looking to keep the momentum when they host HFX Wanderers in the Canadian Premier League Wednesday, August 25 at York Lions Stadium, kick off starting at 6 p.m. eastern.
