Canada bowed out of World Cup Qatar 2022 with a 2-1 loss to Morocco at Al Thumama Stadium Thursday night.

Hakim Ziyech capitalized on an early Milan Borjan mistake to open the scoring for Morocco in the fourth minute. And Youssef En-Nesyri doubled the lead 15 minutes later. Nayef Aguerd directed a Sam Adekugbe cross into his own net towards the end of the first half.

But that’s a close as Canada would get, despite a strong second half effort to find an equalizer.

It was the Canadians third straight defeat, having earlier been beaten by Belgium and Croatia. The loss leaves Canada’s men still searching for their first-ever points at a World Cup.

The win means Morocco advances to the knockout stage having finished the first round atop Group F. Croatia progressed from the same group with a 0-0 draw Thursday with Belgium, who is also eliminated.
