In a league that rarely rewards perfection, sometimes resilience is enough.
York United FC showed exactly that on Saturday evening at ATCO Field, grinding out a determined 1-0 win over Cavalry FC to stretch their unbeaten run in the Canadian Premier League (CPL) to six matches.
Julian Altobelli’s 36th-minute goal, which was his ninth of the campaign, was the difference as the striker capitalized on a costly Cavalry error despite the match being largely controlled by the home side.
It wasn’t pretty, but for coach Mauro Eustaquio’s surging Nine Stripes, it was everything.
“Not all results are pretty, but we have to win games like this as well,” Eustaquio said post-match. “I think the biggest thing for me was to create a culture… where they can go and get three points anywhere in the league.”
York’s last loss, ironically, came in Calgary over a month ago. But on this return trip west, the club from Ontario flipped the script.
While Cavalry dictated possession, territory, and tempo for long stretches, particularly after the break, it was York who found the finishing touch and held their nerve in the trenches.
Gift-wrapped goal punishes Cavalry once more
The decisive moment in the match came in the 36th minute when Cavalry attempted to play out from the back following a short goal kick.
Defender Callum Montgomery’s loose touch was pounced on by York midfielder Kembo Kibato, who muscled into space and fed Altobelli. The young forward made no mistake, slotting a composed finish into the bottom corner to silence the Calgary crowd.
Cavalry had looked increasingly dangerous just minutes earlier with Goteh Ntignee orchestrating two promising chances and Sergio Camargo firing over from close range. But the goal flipped momentum and raised familiar concerns for the Cavs.
“Reality is we gave them a gift, and we didn’t get one back,” said head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “Frustrated with the result, but not the performance.”
It was the ninth time this season where Cavalry have conceded the opening goal and have failed to win the match, extending the record to 0-5-4 across all competitions.
Cavalry dominate but fall short again
From the outset of the second half, Cavalry pressed with intent.
Ntignee, making his first start since rejoining the club, was electric, beating defenders with ease and repeatedly stretching York’s backline.
His partnership with substitute Ayman Sellouf nearly produced the equalizer on multiple occasions, including a dangerous low cross in the 68th minute that Sellouf flicked just wide.
“That’s exactly why we signed them,” Wheeldon Jr. said of Ntignee and Sellouf. “He [Ntignee] offers that pace and power and causes a lot of problems. Sellouf was great when he came in, had a good chance himself, and created a couple of nice 1-v-1 moments.”
Cavalry kept probing throughout the second half, especially after bringing Sellouf and Tobias Warschewski on and turning the tactical shape even more attacking.
But York United, to their credit, held firm.
In the 85th minute, goalkeeper Diego Urtiaga produced a heroic double save to first deny a Montgomery header and then smother the follow-up in a frantic goalmouth scramble.
By full time, Cavalry had outshot, outpossessed, and outchanced their opponents. But unfortunately, the Alberta outfit had nothing to show for it.
“At the end of the day, we didn’t score,” said Cavalry captain Marco Carducci. “We know teams are going to do that against us. We take it as a sign of respect, but now it’s about breaking down those blocks and scoring goals, because that’s what wins games.”
York have now recorded back-to-back clean sheets and three straight wins, a feat that matches their longest streak in club history. They leapfrog Halifax into fourth place and trail Cavalry by just one point, albeit with an extra game played.
“Earlier in the season, when it was late in the game, we would concede,” said Altobelli. “Now you see how our backline and our midfielders and our forwards are all working together to fight and keep this clean sheet.”
Cavalry now hit the road to face Valour FC in Winnipeg on Tuesday, July 29, while York United travel to the capital to take on Atletico Ottawa next Sunday, August 3.
