Match report: Calgary Wild FC claim second straight win as Halifax’s scoring drought deepens

Calgary Wild FC found the breakthrough they had been waiting for at McMahon Stadium Saturday when Kathryn Harvey, a mid-season addition, delivered it in style with a decisive 59th-minute header that secured a 1-0 victory over Halifax Tides FC.

It was a strike that not only handed the Wild back-to-back wins for the first time this season but also kept their faint playoff hopes alive.

“Obviously, great to see Kat get on the scoresheet,” said head coach Lydia Bedford.

“For any forward joining a club mid-season, there’s that added bit of pressure. I’m really pleased she could make that moment count.”

Wild set the tone, Bukovec stands tall

The Alberta side began brightly, nearly striking within the opening minutes when forward Jorian Baucom pounced on a loose back pass. The American threaded a perfect ball into the box to captain Meggie Dougherty-Howard, whose effort unfortunately rattled the post.

Halifax, led on the day by interim coach Katie Barrott – the first New Zealand-born woman to manage a professional club worldwide – responded through 19-year-old loanee Milly Clegg.

Clegg’s pace twice unsettled Calgary’s back line in the match. Yet each time, goalkeeper Stephanie Bukovec stood tall at the back and kept the Tides at bay with ease.

Calgary’s dominance grew as the half wore on. Madison Wilson came inches from producing a spectacular 40-yard strike, forcing Halifax keeper Anika Toth into a desperate save that pushed the ball onto the crossbar. Still, the breakthrough refused to come before the interval.

Harvey delivers the moment as fans go ‘Wild’

The match’s turning point arrived just before the hour mark.

A clever sequence down the right flank, which included Grace Stordy’s throw, Baucom’s deft touch, and Serita Thurton’s pinpoint cross, set up Harvey at the back post.

Harvey, who has twice been named in the CanWest All-Second and USports Championship All-Star teams, rose to meet the ball and steered her header home for her maiden NSL goal.

“It was just great to have that first goal go in,” Harvey said afterward. “As a forward, that’s what you want. Since joining, I’d been craving that moment.”

Calgary pressed for a second, with substitute Sonia O’Neill coming close in the 71st minute, but Halifax held firm. In the dying stages, the visitors threatened an equalizer from a corner, only for Bukovec to again impose herself in the scramble.

Will look forward as playoff chase tightens

For Halifax, the result was another painful reminder of their attacking struggles.

The Tides have now gone seven straight matches without scoring, their last goal dating back to July 12. Despite showing resilience against Vancouver last week, their lack of cutting edge remains costly.

Calgary, meanwhile, have found a spark at the right time. The Wild have now taken six points from their last two matches, defeating Ottawa away and now Halifax at home.

“Winning last week was big for us as a group, especially away from home, and we wanted to keep that momentum going,” Bedford said. “This next run of games is really important. We don’t want to take our foot off the gas.”

The Wild have now claimed three of four meetings with Halifax this year, tightening their grip in what has become a head-to-head battle outside the playoff line. With momentum finally on their side, Bedford’s side know that every point from here could define Calgary’s season.
