Sarah Stratigakis scored a stoppage time winner against Argentina to earn Canada a 1-0 victory at the 2021 SheBelieves Cup in Orlando, Florida Sunday night. The win was Canada’s first at the four-team tournament.

“It was a surreal feeling,” said Stratigakis after the match. “The best part was just jumping into the arms of my teammates.”

Canada’s women carried most of the play during Sunday’s tussle. But they were unable to convert the dominant possession into goals until Stratigakis’ late strike.

First win for coach Priestman

“It wasn’t the prettiest game but the best teams find a way to win and that’s exactly what our group did,” admitted Canada head coach Bev Priestman.

Sunday’s win is the team’s first victory  under manager Priestman, who took over last year. Though, it was only Priestman’s second game as Canada’s head coach. The first was Thursday’s loss to USA.

The SheBelieves Cup is an annual invitational women’s soccer tournament held in the United States in late February or early March. USA and Canada are joined by Brazil and Argentina this year.
