FC Edmonton can take positives from opening day loss

FC Edmonton started the 2021 Canadian Premier League season with a 1-0 loss to Atletico Ottawa in Winnipeg on Saturday.

The Eddies put Ottawa under considerable pressure early and created chances in the first 25 minutes but were not able to capitalize.

There was one worry at the back early as goalkeeper Connor James as the first shot on goal was created off a questionable decision to punch the ball away allowing Atletico to maintain possession.

Offensively, a few opportunities presented themselves for FC Edmonton namely a strike by Tobias Warshewski in the 23rd minute that was deemed offside and a 63rd minute chance created by recently introduced Alberto Avila and Easton Ongaro. Ongaro’s chance was denied by a great save by former FC Edmonton goalkeeper Dylon Powley to keep the game level.

Positive signs for FC Edmonton

Unfortunately for FC Edmonton supporters the good start of the season was soured by a Viti Martinez shot in the 82nd minute after some poor defensive work by FC Edmonton. And it proved decisive as Atletico Ottawa went on to win.

The Eddies had some promising attacks which was something they were lacking in 2020 at the Island Games. Despite the result the Edmonton club will take positives from Saturday, especially at the back, as Atletico Ottawa wasn’t allowed many chances of their own.

FC Edmonton look to follow up this good performance when they play the two-time CPL champions Forge FC on Canada Day.
