CPL Shield race goes down to the wire as Cavalry and Forge stay level

With just one match remaining in the 2026-27 Canadian Premier League (CPL) regular season, the race for the CPL Shield has reached a thrilling climax.

At the end of the penultimate weekend, Cavalry FC and Forge FC are locked together on 57 points after both teams won their respective matches.

The league’s two most-dominant outfits will now enter the final regular-season weekend knowing that the smallest of margins could determine who finishes atop the table.

Both teams have identical records of 17 wins, six draws, and four defeats. Their head-to-head meetings have also failed to separate them, with each side claiming one victory and the other two encounters ending in draws.

That leaves goal difference as the next decisive measure should the clubs finish level on points and wins after their final fixtures.

Cavalry currently holds a seven-goal advantage over Forge, potentially giving the Alberta outfit a crucial edge in the closing chapter of the Shield race.

Goal difference could prove decisive

The CPL’s official tiebreaking rules make for an interesting case ahead of the final round.

Contrary to what some might expect, goal difference is not actually the first measure used to separate teams level on points. The first factor, of course, is total points. This is followed by head-to-head results and then comes the overall goal difference.

Assuming that Cavalry and Forge both get the same result in their final games next weekend, goal difference could ultimately determine the destination of the CPL Shield.

This makes Cavalry’s emphatic 6-0 victory over FC Supra du Quebec a few weeks back extremely critical and therefore highlights their immense attacking output this season.

That result helped the Cavs build the current seven-goal cushion they have and now forces Forge to face an uphill challenge of winning their last game with a high goal margin.

A convincing Forge victory could change the equation dramatically. Should the Hamilton side somehow miraculously make up the entire seven-goal gap in that final weekend, the next criterion would be goals scored across the regular season.

If that measure also fails to separate the teams, the league would turn to away goal difference, followed by away goals scored, home goal difference, and home goals scored.

The remaining criteria are disciplinary points, the number of minutes played by domestic Under-21 players and, ultimately, a coin toss if two clubs remain inseparable.

One final weekend to settle the Shield race

The rivalry between Cavalry and Forge has repeatedly set the standard in the CPL, and now this final battle for the Shield this season has developed into a contest that could very well be decided by a single goal, a late equalizer, or a defensive stand in the dying minutes.

For Cavalry, the immediate objective now will be to protect the advantage they have built over the course of the season. A win could potentially be enough for them to lift the Shield on Sunday when they host Vancouver FC.

For Forge, the task is equally clear as well. They must secure the necessary result against Pacific FC and leave themselves every opportunity to reclaim the top spot.

The Hammers have an additional test in between as well when they face Major League Soccer (MLS) side CF Montreal midweek in the Canadian Championship final.
