Cavalry FC’s ‘Hammer’ and ‘Shield’ prepare to make life miserable for visiting attackers

Cavalry FC has spent years building a reputation as the Canadian Premier League (CPL)’s most resilient outfit. But heading into their 2026 home opener, coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. appears to have assembled something far more intimidating than mere resilience.

When the gates at Spruce Meadows swing open this Sunday, the Calgary faithful will witness the formal introduction of a defensive partnership that has the rest of the league checking their mirrors.

In Amer Didic and Daan Klomp, Cavalry possesses two of the most decorated individuals to ever patrol a CPL penalty area. On paper, it is a super team pairing. But on the pitch, it is what Wheeldon Jr. affectionately calls the ‘hammer’ and the ‘shield.’

“I look at all the best centre-back pairings whether it be our league or around the world and you’ve always got one that’s the hammer and one that’s the shield. And I think they complement each other in that way because they read off each other’s play,” said Wheeldon Jr.

The duo’s first competitive audition together last weekend in a 2-1 victory over Pacific FC provided a tantalizing glimpse of the future.

While chemistry usually requires months of seasoning, the early signs suggest that Didic and Klomp are already operating on a shared frequency.

The architecture of an Alberta wall

In this modern tactical setup, the roles are clearly defined.

Amer Didic enters the fold as the ‘shield’. The ultimate defensive anchor. At 6’4″, his game is built on prevention and protection.

Statistically the league’s most consistent and pure defender, Didic consistently is always on top of the charts in aerial duels won, clearances, and interceptions. When a team is under siege, Didic is the stationary wall that absorbs the pressure.

“Obviously, there’s the height involved with me and then the aerial component of everything is a big thing for me and the physicality,” Didić said during Thursday’s press conference.

But he also spoke at length about his desire to be a secure passer, ensuring that Cavalry’s transition from defense to attack remains smooth and transitional.

Beside him stands the ‘hammer,’ Daan Klomp.

While the 2023 CPL Player of the Year is an elite defender, he is a more dynamic, aggressive force who impacts both ends of the pitch.

Known for striking the opponent, as evidenced by his league-leading six goals during the 2024 season, Klomp often carries the ball forward to shatter a midfield press. He doesn’t wait for the attack to come to him. He actually proactively hits the game.

According to Wheeldon Jr., the two have gravitated toward one another because they “read off each other’s play.” The manager noted: “They talk, they discuss, they debate, they challenge. So yeah, it’s been really good to watch them grow.”

Building a bond beyond the pitch

The most frightening prospect for the rest of the CPL is Didic’s admission that this partnership is still in its infancy.

Despite the win in Victoria, he believes the ceiling for this defensive unit is significantly higher. “It’s definitely something that’s going to be growing for sure,” he said. “And I don’t think we’re even close to the best that we can be.”

That growth isn’t just happening during tactical drills or video sessions.

In the modern game, the most successful center-back pairings often share a telepathy rooted in personal connection. Didic revealed that he and Klomp have spent the preseason focused on the human level, building a friendship that he hopes transcribes onto the pitch.

“He’s a great player for sure,” Didic said of his partner. “It’s great to have someone next to you there that understands the game so well with his mind and obviously playing the game as well. He is just a great partner to have.”

The objective for this pairing seems to be clear. Restore the fear factor to Spruce Meadows.

Didic, an Edmonton boy who spent years visiting Calgary as an opponent, recalled winning only once at the venue in his entire career. Now, he wants to ensure that the record remains just as bleak for others.

“Every week that goes by, it’s going to improve and hopefully be something where, you know, we’re coming to Calgary, we got to play Calgary. You know, that’s not fun,” Didic said with a smirk.

With 27 games remaining in the regular season, the ‘hammer’ and the ‘shield’ are just getting started. If they continue to blossom at this rate, the rest of the league might find that scoring at ATCO Field might get more than just difficult. It might be impossible.
