Canadian defender Derek Cornelius suffered a non-contact lower-body injury during a national team training session on Wednesday.
Canada Soccer confirmed the 28-year-old Olympique de Marseille defender was taken to a Toronto-area hospital, via a statement on X.
“Canada Soccer’s medical staff are focused on supporting Derek and his full recovery, and we will provide further updates as appropriate,” read a portion of the statement.
His injury follows the departure of midfielder Jeevan Badwal. The midfielder was sent back to Vancouver earlier Wednesday after injuring his hamstring playing for the Whitecaps on Saturday.
Both players were training for Canada’s upcoming fall friendlies:
- Sept. 26: vs. Chile (Toronto)
- Oct. 3: vs. Peru (Montreal)
- Oct. 6: vs. United States (St. Paul, Minn.)
These matches will be Canada’s first since the World Cup in the summer.
