Alphonso Davies suffers hamstring tear, coach Kompany says it ‘doesn’t look so bad’

Canadian men’s national soccer team skipper Alphonso Davies left the pitch limping heavily at the Allianz Arena while playing for his club Bayern Munich Saturday.

The 25-year-old’s face was visible of pain and frustration, which is unfortunately an image that will send a chill through Canadian soccer circles.

Davies was forced off in the 47th minute of Munich’s 3-2 win over Eintracht Frankfurt after an innocuous challenge for the ball. Teammates consoled him as he made his way toward the dressing room under his own power, which was a small mercy in the moment.

Initial fears of a long-term setback, however, were tempered later in the day when Bayern confirmed Davies had suffered a torn muscle fibre in his right hamstring.

Manager, teammates positive on recovery

Bayern manager Vincent Kompany struck a cautiously hopeful tone when quizzed on the topic after the match. “It doesn’t look so bad. I don’t know if it’s two or four weeks. But there’s the feeling it won’t take that long,” he told DAZN.

Teammate Joshua Kimmich chimed in too and described Davies as “very down and sad” on the pitch, though “a little more composed in the dressing room.”

Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, also admitted that “it looked like it might be something longer-term,” before adding that the issue appeared muscular.

The club later confirmed that Davies will be sidelined “for the time being.”

Davies was replaced by Hiroki Ito and Bayern held on to extend their lead atop the Bundesliga table. The Bavarian side have Josip Stanisic and Raphael Guerreiro as options at left back, which is a reminder that Bayern’s title chase rolls on regardless.

For Canada, however, the implications land differently.

World Cup clock ticking for Canada’s captain

Canada co-hosts the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the United States and Mexico from June 11 to July 19 and Davies remains the face of the men’s national team project.

He has earned 58 caps since 2017 and has scored 15 goals in the process. However, nothing was more significant than him scoring Canada’s first-ever men’s World Cup goal in 2022 when the Maple Leafs lost 4-1 against eventual third-placed finishers Croatia.

Yet injuries have trailed the former Vancouver Whitecaps FC player.

Davies tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee while on international duty last March, an episode that prompted Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen to accuse Canada Soccer of being “grossly negligent” in its handling of the situation.

Davies later returned in December, making his first appearance in nine months in a Champions League match against Sporting CP. Saturday’s match was his 12th game back and fifth start since that return.

The concern now is less about the calendar and more about explosiveness. Davies’ game is built on speed with those long, surging runs down the left flank. Muscle injuries, particularly hamstring issues, threaten that quality.

At his peak, in 2023, Davies was widely regarded as one of the world’s premier left backs. But his form since returning has fluctuated and he has yet to fully impose himself under Canada manager Jesse Marsch.

Davies had also expressed a desire to play in a more advanced midfield role at the World Cup, a shift that could have unlocked a breakout tournament on home soil. This recent setback, however, introduces uncertainty into that plan.

For now, Bayern’s assessment offers measured reassurance. The tear is small and the timeline unclear but not ominous. Still, for a player who has endured an ACL rupture, muscle injuries and even myocarditis earlier in his career, every twinge carries added weight.
