York United claimed their first win of the season with a 3-0 victory over Vancover FC at York Lions Stadium in North York Friday.
Brian Wright scored a brace and Dennis Salanovic scored his first Canadian Premier League goal to earn the home side all three points.
Vancouver FC enjoyed the majority of the possession on the first half, but failed to find the net with York United well organized.
York United began to be more dominant in the second half. And Martin Nash’s decision to bring in Dennis Salanovic and Josue Martinez in 66th minutes made the home side even more dangerous.
But York United had to wait for another seven minutes before they were finally able to break Vancouver’s defensive wall. In the 73rd minute Cordova broke into the box, and put in a low cross that Brian Wright tapped in to put York up 1-0.
The Nine Stripe became hotter as the evening grew colder. And in the 84th minute Wright provided an assist to Salanovic who slotted home. The night became Wright’s night as he closed the game with a second goal late into stoppage time earning him a Man of the Match. Clement Bayiha was the provider sending in a through ball in to Wright’s path.
The win and performance will likely provide needed confidence as York next face CPL leaders Forge FC in the Canadian Championship next week.
