Forge FC continued their perfect start to the new 2024 Canadian Premier League season with a 3-0 victory over York United in the 905 Derby in Toronto Sunday.
York began the game well and put early pressure on the visitors. Forge FC keeper Chris Kalongo was forced to make a flying save to deny Clement Bayiha from distance. Brian Wright had a chance to give York United a lead following Bayiha effort to penetrate and deliver a good cross. However, Forge’s Olowabi-Belewu intervened and Kalongo collected the loose ball.
Forge had chances of their own. In the 20th minute Tristan Borges delivered a beautiful pass into the box for David Choiniere but the latter was unable to put capitalize. But just before half time Choiniere finally put Forge in the lead – a beautiful Daniel Parra pass found Choiniere who placed his effort in the top right corner of the net.
Forge FC find more goals in second half
Forge became more comfortable and confident after the restart and the Hamilton club began to exploit a struggling York defence. In the 62nd minute, Parra linked up with Borges in the box, who laid a lovely ball out wide for Beni Badibanga to score. Badibanga showed great composure and slot the ball into the net pass York’s goalkeeper Vincensini.
Choiniere then sealed the win for Forge 6 minutes later. A defensive mistake from Nyal Higgins, who was trying to shield the ball over the line, allowed Tristan Borges to poke the ball back to Choiniere in the centre of the box. Choiniere didn’t waste the chance and scored his second goal of the game, putting the results beyond doubt.
Forge FC is off to a perfect start this season, securing two wins for the first time. The two sides will collide again in the opening round of 2024 Canadian Championship at Tim Hortons Field on May 1, 2024.
