FC Edmonton lost 1-0 to York9 FC in its penultimate game of the Canadian Premier League Island Games Tuesday. The Eddies are no officially eliminated and are still rooted at the bottom of the table with one point from six matches.
FC Edmonton outshot again
Despite having 51.5 percent of the possession, FC Edmonton was unable to create much offensively on Tuesday getting only three shots and none on target. York9 FC were able to use their possession much more effectively posting 12 shot attempts on net, putting 4 on target.
An air of desperation
As the game progressed there was a shift from a calm possession based passing game, where Edmonton kept possession and pushed York 9 FC back, to a more direct play with long passes over the midfield. The Eddies desperation became predictable and had trouble moving the ball up the field constructively when under pressure.
The game was settled when Manuel Aparicio scored a second free kick in as many matches from just outside the box. And the lone goal was all York9 needed to secure the win and vault into third place, as the Eddies were unable to produce any meaningful efforts on goal afterward.
FC Edmonton win the wooden spoon
With the loss, FC Edmonton get the unfortunate honour of being the Canadian Premier League Wooden Spoon recipients for 2020 regardless of the result next Sunday. The Wooden Spoon is a faux award given to the team with the worst record in Canadian Premier League. With any luck this will be one of the few times the Eddies win this award.
But FC Edmonton will have one more chance to get a win on Sunday September.6th when the Eddies play Pacific at 1pm MT / 3 ET
