Valour FC announced the signing of Canadian defender Zachary Fernandez Monday ahead of the 2025 Canadian Premier League season. The contract is guaranteed through 2025, with an option for the following season.

The 23-year-old joins the Winnipeg club after three seasons with fellow CPL club HFX Wanderers in Halifax.

And Valour FC is hoping their new signing’s CPL experience will help them reach the playoffs for the first time in it’s history this year.

“Zach will elevate the quality of our back line as he’s a real competitor,” said Phillip Dos Santos Valour FC head coach. “He adds a different dimension to the way we can utilize our fullbacks. He’s a true competitor, a player you hate to play against but love having on your side. He fits the mentality and identity we want to bring to our squad. The truth is that today, with Zach, we are a better team.”

The right-back led Halifax’s club in assists during his rookie season in 2022, scoring his first goal in 2023.

Fernandez is a CF Montréal Academy product, later attending training camp with the Major League Soccer club’s senior squad in 2020 and 2021.

Valour FC kick off the 2025 CPL season on the road against Pacific FC on Vancouver Island April 5 before hosting HFX Wanderers in their home opener April 25.
