Canada beat the United States 2-1 in the 2025 Concacaf Nations League third place game at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, California Sunday.

Canada were playing in after losing 2-0 to Mexico in the semifinal Thursday.

Minnesota United forward Tani Oluwaseyi gave the Canadians the lead when he scored his first-ever international goal in 27th minute.

Patrick Agyemang equalized for the hosts 10 minutes before halftime. And Canada head coach Jesse Marsch was sent off with a red card after complaining about a call by the referee.

But Jonathan David scored what turned out to be the winner with 30 minutes left – the Lille OSC striker scoring his 32nd goal for his country.

Post match reaction:

“We wanted to win this tournament. I think we showed that in the game the other night, the performance against Mexico. It didn’t go our way. But the mentality of this team is strong. And today was another big test for us against a very good American team. And it showed that we’re ready to compete and beat everyone in this region.” – Mauro Biello, Canada assistant coach

“Of course, it’s only a third-place game, but man that means a lot. I think for the people back home, it means a lot to me. Really proud of the team, and really proud of every single guy that went out there and stepped up. We came together and put in a hell of a performance we can all be really proud of.” – Alistair Johnston, Canada fullback, speaking to OneSoccer

“I just remember Ali getting the ball, and I knew I was in a good space. So when I received the ball I saw Tajon running beyond me, and from there I knew the defender had to respect his run and go with him. So then I take my touch inside and finish with the left foot.” – Jonathan David, Canada forward and match winner

“It’s not in our DNA to roll around on the ground and play that way, I think you’ve seen that through Copa América, you’ve seen that through this tournament as well, we’re just too honest of people. I think that he felt we were almost getting hard done by. People were taking our niceness and using it as a negative, taking advantage of it. It’s not fair that just because we aren’t going to roll around and con people we shouldn’t get the calls that we deserve.” – Alistair Johnston, Canada fullback, speaking to OneSoccer

“Jessie was sticking up for his team. And in the end, for sure, it galvanized the boys. They saw the trust and how much it means to him and we were able to come back and get that second goal.” – Mauro Biello, Canada assistant coach
