Canada lost 1-0 to the United States in their final group stage game of the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup in Kansas City Sunday.
Shaq Moore’s scored the game’s lone goal in the first 20 seconds, capitalizing on a poor Canadian start. Shortly after Canada were denied a penalty when it looked like USA’s Walker Zimmerman brought down Richie Laryea in the box in the ninth minute.
Despite the loss, Canada looked the better of the two teams for most of the match and Canada head coach saw positives to take.
“I thought the US were able to cause that back five problems,” said Herdman after the match. “I think we had enough shots, we got into enough good areas,” Herdman said. “I don’t think we were threatening enough when we got in and around that penalty area. There were moments we just had to serve the ball into the box.
“We’ve got real predators in there in Larin, Cavallini. We just wanted that extra pass to come back across and I just thought that was a big missed opportunity.”
The Canadians next face either Costa Rica or Jamaica in the quarterfinals next weekend.
