Canada opened the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup with a 4-1 victory over Martinique in Kansas City Sunday.
Goals by Cyle Larin, Jonathan Osorio, Stephen Eustáquio, and Theo Corbeanu ensured Canada collected all three points after Emmanuel Rivière had given Martinique the early lead.
“It’s going to be tight in this group,” said Canada coach John Herdman after the match. “Everyone wants to win the group to control their destiny for the next round. To get a plus 3 (goal differential) tonight, I’m happy about that
“I’m really pleased we got that test early with the response straight back on task. At this stage of the tournament, we needed something like that.”
Canada will next face Haiti Thursday, before wrapping up the group stage against the United States Sunday, July 18.
