Calgary Foothills FC claimed a 2-1 victory over visiting Portland Timbers U23 Sunday afternoon.
Club captain Jay Wheeldon and Tofa Fakunle scored for Foothills FC, while Dokota Barnathan scored a penalty kick for the visitors in the first half.

Foothills FC now find themselves in first place in the PDL Northwest Division.
“It’s nice to sit top of the table,” admitted head coach Tommy Wheeldon after the match.
“I think we’ve just tweaked things. We’re more organized when we defend. We’re more ruthless when we attack. We hunt like a pack of wolves.”
Sunday’s match was the second meeting of the two clubs in three days. Foothills FC beat Timbers U23 4-0 on Friday night. Because of the previous one-sided contest, Foothills FC’s coach said his side was prepared for a bit of a battle Sunday afternoon.

“We had to get our emotions in check, because we knew it was going to be chippy,” said Wheeldon. “I’d have done exactly the same as them. If I’d been hurt on a Friday night, by a four nil scoreline, I’m coming out fighting. Unfortunately for them, it’s cost them bookings and red cards. We’ve capitalized on it, and that’s the difference in our team this year.
Timbers U23 had two players red carded in the second half – Jorge Herranz 64th minute and Dakota Barnathan in the 87th.
Calgary Foothills FC next host Victoria Highlanders FC June 10 and June 12.
