Canadian Premier League club Forge FC successfully held Major League Soccer’s CF Montréal 1-1 in their Canadian Championship quarterfinal first leg in Hamilton Tuesday.
David Choiniere continued his good performance with a goal in the first half before Montreal’s number ten; Bryce Duke scored an equaliser goal on the second half. Duke’s goal is an important away goal for CF Montreal as they will host the 2nd leg at Stade Saputo.
Forge FC set their second highest attendance ever, 14,923, thanks to the thousands of students on hand for the School Day match.
David Choiniere, who was facing his younger brother Mathieu, opened the scoring for Forge in the 31st minute. Beni Badibanga dribbled through the left side and cross the ball into the centre of penalty box, Choiniere then finished with a thunderous kick into the Montreal’s goal.
Montreal started the second half with four substitutions. They brought in Raheem Edwards, Bryce Duke, Ariel Lassiter, and George Campbell to replace Ousman Jabang, Mason Toye, Ruan Teixeira, and Illias Iliadis.
As the result, Montreal controlled the possession at the beginning of the second half. Bryce Duke equalized for Montreal in the 52nd minute. Duke scored after some good movement by Mathieu Choiniere and slotted the ball pass Christopher Kalongo. Montreal continued to control the game but failed to increase the lead while Forge FC last minute effort was unable to pass Sebastian Breza. In the end both sides settled for the draw
Montreal going into the second leg with an important away goal and will host at the Saputo Stadium on May 22nd, 2024.
This weekend, Lionel Messi and co will visit Stade Saputo. While Forge FC will travel to Starlight Stadium to play Pacific FC.
