Cavalry FC beat their provincial rivals FC Edmonton 2-0 Thursday night to move top of the Canadian Premier League’s Island Games first round standings.
Jordan Brown scored both goals for the Calgary club – the first in the 44th minute and the second a penalty late in stoppage time. FC Edmonton’s Terique Mohammed was sent off after a bad challenge on Mohamed Farsi in the 49th minute.
“It was a cagey affair to start with, but I thought we just had to be patient and persevere,” said Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. on OneSoccer.ca. “We had to keep moving the ball and tire them down.”
The result moves Cavalry FC above second place Forge FC by two points and keeps FC Edmonton at the bottom of the table, yet to earn a point.
“The referees didn’t cost FC Edmonton tonight,” admitted FC Edmonton coach Jeff Paulus after the game. “Our lack of scoring did. We just didn’t do enough”
Cavalry FC next play HFX Wanderers Sunday while FC Edmonton play Atletico the same day.
