Calgary Foothills FC claimed a second straight victory over visiting TSS FC Rovers in Calgary Sunday afternoon.
The home side won 2-0 on goals from Chris Rushworth and Kyle Jones, who has now scored three penalties in three games. The victory means that Foothills FC leave the opening weekend of the 2017 Premier Development League (PDL) season with a perfect record of two wins in two matches.
Foothills FC’s head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. admitted that Sunday’s contest wasn’t the same spectacular goal-fest served up Friday night, when Foothills FC fought back from three goals down to win 4-3 over Rovers. But he was just as pleased with Sunday’s result.“We know how to win games,” said Wheeldon, following the match. “It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t a spectacle like it was the other night. But we don’t give much up and we’re hard to beat.”
TSS FC Rovers travel back to British Columbia without any points. But their head coach remained positive and philosophical and says there were lessons for his new squad to take away from their first two matches ever played in the PDL.“It was just having our players getting a feel for what this is,” said TSS FC Rovers head coach Colin Elmes. “The adversity part of the game – some of these guys haven’t been through that at this level before. So you’ve got to throw them into the deep end of the pool and see what happens.”

But it was Foothills FC’s coach who was understandably the happier of the two managers.
“For us, that’s a fantastic opening weekend,” said Wheeldon. “When I look back on the season and say, right I took six points from the first two, as a coach, I’ve got to be happy with that.”

Calgary Foothills FC and TSS FC Rovers meet each other again May 19 in Burnaby, BC, where Rovers will serve as hosts.
It’ll be over a month until Foothills FC play in Calgary again, as they are set to play the next four matches on the road. They next play in Calgary June 16, when they host Lane United.
