FC Edmonton will begin holding voluntary training sessions for players at Clarke Stadium on Thursday, June 11 to prepare for the possible 2020 Canadian Premier League the club announced Wednesday. The news means all eight clubs will be back training for the first time since the preseason pause was announced in March.
The club received approval from its provincial and municipal health authorities, as well as the Canadian Premier League (CPL) office to return to training, the club announced today. Alberta’s other CPL club, Cavalry FC, began similar training Tuesday.
“The team is excited to get back on the pitch but my priority still remains to do this as safely as possible for the players, staff, and their families,” said FC Edmonton Head Coach Jeff Paulus via a club statement.

Loading ...FC Edmonton will adopt a phased approach as it returns to training that begins with non-contact individual or small group workouts, and eventually progresses into larger group and full-team training sessions over a period of time.
The club says the plan is designed to provide a secure, sanitary and controlled environment that ensures adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols and physical distancing measures to support the club’s top priority of guaranteeing the safety and well-being of its players, coaches, technical staff, employees, and their families when training begins and beyond.
FC Edmonton training sessions will be closed to all media while the club works with evolving protocols of health and safety regulations put out by national and local government and health officials.
Canadian Premier League yet to announce season format
The format of the 2020 Canadian Premier League season has yet to be announced. But, it is expected to be shortened greatly to perhaps a tournament format and could be hosted in a single venue to isolate players, staff members and officials.
Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island and Langford , BC, on Vancouver Island, have been identified as possible locations.
