Cavalry FC announced the signing of French-born Congolese international striker Dominique Malonga Wednesday, as the Calgary club continues to build its squad for the inaugural season of the Canadian Premier League (CPL), Canada’s new professional soccer league.
Malonga came through the AS Monaco youth system in France. He joined Italian Serie A club Torino in 2007. The 30-year-old moved around Italy from 2008 to 2013 playing for Foggia, Cesena and Vicenza.
He went on loan to Murica in Spain before playing for Hibs in the Scottish Championship from 2014 to 2016. Malonga has most recently played for Servette, of Switzerland, Chania, of Greece.
Malonga played youth level football for France before earning senior international caps for Congo.
A potential fan favourite
“We are delighted to bring Dominique to Calgary,” said Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. via a team statement Wednesday. “He is a top talent with valuable experience, along with a good goal scoring record in some big leagues in Europe. His background speaks for itself and I foresee him becoming a fan favourite with his exciting style of play and great persona.”
And the well-traveled striker is looking forward to making his Canadian debut with Calgary’s new soccer club.
“I am so lucky and grateful to the sport of football because it has given me the opportunity to experience different countries, people, and culture,” said Malonga. “I am excited to add Canada to that list of countries.”

The Canadian Premier League is a new professional soccer league set to kick off in April 2019. Cavalry FC is Calgary’s club and will play its home games at Spruce Meadows.
