Cavalry FC announced the signings of four new players Tuesday as the club continues to prepare for the Canadian Premier League’s inaugural season.
Forward Nico Pasquotti, midfielder Carlos Patino, fullback Dean Northover and goalkeeper Niko Giantsopolous have signed deals with Calgary’s new professional soccer club. The Canadian Premier League is set to start late April 2019.
Cavalry FC’s new quartet join recent signings Oliver Minatel (F), Marco Carducci (GK), Chris Serban (FB), Elijah Adekugbe (M), Dominick Zator (CB), Nik Ledgerwood (M) and Sergio Camargo (M).
Banking on existing successful formula
Pasquotti, Patino and Northover were all members of the 2018 Premier Development League championship winning Calgary Foothills FC side, then managed by current Cavalry FC coach and general manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr.
The signings continue a trend, with the Cavalry FC manager seemingly banking on the formula that brought success to his Foothills FC last summer. Nine of Cavalry FC’s 11 signings to date played under Wheeldon with Calgary Foothills FC.
“Dean (Northover) is a terrific player and should have been playing professionally before now,” said Wheeldon via a club statement. “Having worked with him for 5-plus years now, he is a very consistent player with exceptional control and 1v1 defending.
“Nico (Pasquotti) is a really exciting player that adds exceptional pace and drive to our team. He’s someone who will excite the fans and inspire his teammates.
“Carlos (Patino) is technically very good. He has a great passing range that creates a ton of goal scoring opportunities. He adds versatility to our attacking depth and is one of the hardest working players I’ve seen.”
Goalkeeper made impression on coaching staff
Goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos joins the club after impressed Cavalry FC coaching staff in the club’s prospects camp in fall 2018. He is the second goalkeeper to sign for Cavalry FC, joining Calgary-native Marco Carducci.
“Jordan Santiago (Cavalry FC goalkeeper coach) was impressed with his positioning and reflex ability,” said Tommy Wheeldon. “He is also a terrific character and one we’ll need around the club and in the community.”
