Cavalry FC announced the signing of Portugal-born Canadian midfielder Mauro Eustáquio Wednesday, as the Calgary club continues to build its squad for the inaugural season of the Canadian Premier League (CPL), Canada’s new professional soccer league.

Eustáquio, 26, spent time with youth academies of Grupo Desportivo Os Nazarenos and U.D. Leiria in Portugal before beginning his senior career with Sporting Clube Pombal in 2012.

He eventually signed with Ottawa Fury (in the North American Soccer League, at the time) in 2014. He then played for FC Edmonton in 2017 before moving to Penn FC, of the United Soccer League, in 2018.

“Mauro is a great addition to our squad, a terrific ball player with a competitive edge in the midfield,” said Tommy Wheeldon Jr., Cavalry FC head coach, via a club statement Wednesday. “He brings with him a lot of professional experience from across North American (NASL and USL), whilst also being another quality Canadian with international pedigree.”

And Eustáquio is a fan of the club culture his new head coach has already built in Calgary.

“Cavalry FC has put together a great group of professionals,” said Eustáquio. “When you step into the Cavalry environment you realize that everyone here is demanding and holding themselves accountable. No one is scared of hard work. Everyone knows we need to be at our best and as a team to be successful.”
