Cavalry FC announced the signing of German midfielder Julian Büscher Wednesday, as the Calgary club prepares for the inaugural season of the Canadian Premier League (CPL), Canada’s new professional soccer league.

Büscher, 25, will come to Calgary after a season in the United Soccer League (USL) with LA Galaxy II, LA Galaxy’s reserve team. Prior to that he spent two seasons with Major League Soccer’s D.C. United, which included a loan spell with USL’s Rochester Rhinos.

The central midfielder began his youth career in Germany with VFL Bochum before turning professional with Preußen Münster. He made appearances for the German national team at U16 and U18 levels as a youth.

Cavalry FC’s head coach believes he and his club have done extremely well to secure the signature of the German midfielder.

“Julian’s signing is a coup for us,” said Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. via a club statement Wednesday. “He’s a former German youth international who’s had great experience this side of the water in the MLS.

“He’s the type of central midfielder that has a great engine to get around the pitch, is tactically astute and likes to get on the ball and break lines with his passes and forward runs.”

And Büscher says he’s looking forward to continuing his professional soccer career in North America with the young club and league.

“It’s definitely something special to be a part of something new and powerful, and therefore very exciting,” said Julian Büscher.

Büscher is expected to arrive in Calgary February 2019 to begin training pending the expected approval of appropriate visas/work permits and pending International Transfer Certificate (ITC) approval.
