Cavalry FC makes changes to roster to face FC Edmonton in Al Classico 2nd leg

Cavalry FC has announced the roster of players to face FC Edmonton in Saturday’s second-leg prospects match, or Al Classico, at Clarke Stadium in Edmonton.

As expected, the squad again features a number of Calgary Foothills FC players who won the Premier Development League championship this summer with Cavalry FC manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr., including the first-leg man-of-the-match Nico Pasquotti.

But Wheeldon has made some alterations to the squad that drew 2-2 with their northern Canadian Premier League rivals at Spruce Meadows in Calgary in September.

Of particular note, there are four players that played for US clubs in the Premier Development League Northwest Division last season – the same division as Calgary Foothills FC.

Jon Stadler, Willie Spurr and Nick Moon arrive from Lane United and Cazz Spurr joins from Seattle Sounders U23. Spurr and Moon were Lane United’s top scorers last season, combining to score 13 goals.

Both Cavalry FC and FC Edmonton will play in the new Canadian Premier League when it kicks off in 2019.

The term ‘Al Classico’ is a local take on La Liga’s El Clásico – the name given to any football match between fierce rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. ‘Al Classico’ was suggested as the soccer version of the Battle of Alberta and local supporters drove the initial concept.

Tickets for Saturday’s match are available here.
