Defenders Dominick Zator, Jonathan “Jay” Wheeldon and Dean Northover and midfielder Bruno Zebie will not return to the Cavalry FC squad for the 2021 Canadian Premier League season, the club announced Tuesday.
“I’ve worked with each of these players for many years and can’t thank them enough for what they’ve helped build here in Calgary and their contributions to the growth of the Canadian Premier League,” said Tommy Wheeldon Jr., via a club statement Tuesday. “The world we live in now is an extremely challenging one where lots of sacrifices have been made by many.
“Wherever they go next in their lives, I’m sure they will add value to that environment with their character and capability.”
Key defenders leaving the club
Dominick Zator will leave a large hole in Cavalry FC’s defense, having declined a contract extension to explore free agency. Primarily a central defender, the 26-year-old made 47 appearances for Calgary’s club in two years, scoring four goals.
Jay Wheeldon, an A-Licensed coach, has left the Cavs roster to focus on his coaching career. The central defender made 28 appearances for Cavalry FC over two years. The 32-year-old has previous coaching experience with the Calgary Foothills set-up.
Dean Northover is retiring from professional football, choosing to focus on another career. The 29-year-old full-back made 20 appearances for the Cavs over two years at the club.
Midfielder’s option not taken
Bruno Zebie’s option to re-sign was not taken by the club. The 25-year-old midfielder made 10 appearances for Cavalry FC in 2020. Zebie played for FC Edmonton prior to joining the Cavs.
