Cavalry FC announced the signing of Canadian goalkeeper Tyson Farago for the 2021 Canadian Premier League (CPL) season.

Farago will join Marco Carducci on Cavalry FC’s goalkeeping roster, after Niko Giantsoplous left to join York9 FC late last year. The 29-year-old will likely begin his Cavs career as the backup keeper – Carducci has been the club’s regular starter for its first two seasons, picking up the CPL’s top goalkeeper award in 2019.

But the Farago will expect to get several starts due the compressed nature of the Canadian Premier League, which is hoping to begin its 2021 season in May.

“I want to thank the Cavalry organization for giving me this opportunity,” said Tyson Farago, via a club statement Thursday. “They have been a model franchise in the Canadian Premier League, and I am honoured to be a part of the great culture they have established.”

CPL and NASL experience

Farago played with Valour FC in the CPL’s first season in 2019, making 16 league appearances for Winnipeg’s club. But Cavalry FC fans should note, he was not in goal for Valour FC when the Calgary club famously beat them 8-0 in 2019.

Before that he played 22 league matches for FC Edmonton when the club competed in the North American Soccer League in 2014.

“Tyson is a very good goalkeeper with valuable professional experience under his belt, that we felt would be a good addition to our side,” said Tommy Wheeldon Jr., Cavalry FC head coach. “We’ve kept track of him for a while through his FC Edmonton and Valour days and in terms of attitude and ability, he ticks both boxes for us.  He’s a good shot stopper with terrific reflexes and possession wise, has very good distribution skills.”
