Canada opened its 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup campaign with a disappointing 2-2 draw with Guadeloupe in Toronto Tuesday.
Many of Canada’s European-based star players were left out of the tournament squad, including Jonathan David and Alphonso Davies. But despite this, Canada’s depleted squad was still expected to beat the small Caribbean island nation in its opening game.
Canada concede first
Guadeloupe opened the scoring when Thierry Ambrose easily turned Canadian defender Steven Vitoria to slot past keeper Milan Borjan in the 23rd minute.
Canada responded well in the second half, equalizing then taking the lead thanks to a goal by Lucas Cavallini and an own goal by Méddy Lina.
But the points were eventually shared thanks to a Jacen Russell-Rowe own goal in the 93rd minute.
“We got done on set pieces and on that last goal,” Canada coach John Herdman said after the game. “I don’t think we need to concede a goal. But it’s football and concentration because we lacked in those last minutes.”
Canada next travels to Houston to face Guatemala.
