Calgary’s new professional soccer team will be called the Calgary Wild FC.

The Northern Super League, the new Canadian women’s soccer league, launched the club at a media event in Calgary Thursday.

The club’s logo and colours were also unveiled at the announcement – the crest features a red and purple owl’s head.

“This team and league are not only about professional women’s soccer,” said Deanna Zumwalt, Calgary Wild FC Board Chair. “It’s about setting the stage where Canadian female athletes are celebrated and where their achievements can inspire the next generation of young players.”

Cenovus Energy, an oil and natural gas company headquartered in Calgary, was also announced as the club’s sponsor. The club will play their home games at McMahon Stadium.

The Northern Super League was founded in-part by Diana Matheson, a former Canadian international soccer player and two-time Olympic bronze medalist.
