Atlético Ottawa announced the departure of head coach Carlos González Thursday.

A club statement said the club and González “mutually agreed to part ways” after three years as manager of the capital city club.

“Thank you, Ottawa,” said González via the club statement. “I have felt at home from the first day I set foot in this great country. I arrived in the magnificent capital of Canada thanks to the trust of Atlético de Madrid, taking on a complex but at the same time exciting challenge, that of positioning a practically newborn project in a place where it can fight alongside the strongest.”

González reign saw successes and disappointments

The 38-year-old coach earned the club its first title when Ottawa won the Canadian Premier League regular season in 2022. González was named Coach of the Year award as a result. Ottawa would later lose the CPL final to Forge FC.

The following two seasons saw Atlético finish in sixth place in 2023, failing to reach the playoffs, and third place in 2024, reaching the semifinals of the playoffs.

“The process and the day-to-day were as challenging as they were rewarding,” said González. “I can say that we’ve enjoyed the journey so much. I leave feeling happy and satisfied with the work done in terms of club structure, player development and of course results.

“Being able to help the growth of the club and football in the city has been a privilege.”

Atlético thanked González for his “commitment and professionalism” in the statement. There was no mention of a replacement coach.
