Cavalry FC beat FC Edmonton 3-1 in their final match of the Canadian Premier League regular season at Spruce Meadows Saturday afternoon. The result means Cavalry FC finish top of the CPL fall season.
Sergio Camargo, Jordan Brown and José Escalante scored for the hosts in the second half, while FC Edmonton’s Easton Ongaro scored a consolation goal late.
Cavalry FC will next play Hamilton’s Forge FC in the first leg of the Canadian Premier League Championship Finals series in Hamilton Saturday. The two will meet again a week later in Calgary for the second leg Nov. 2.
“For us now, it’s heading into a playoff,” said Cavs head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. following the match. “ It’s going to be a tough road because Forge are an exceptional side and they deserve to be in the final with us. We’re looking forward to it.”
Cavalry FC also lifted the Wildrose Cup after Saturday’s match for winning the Al Classico, the fan-driven season-long competition between Cavalry FC and FC Edmonton, eventually joining fans in the stands to celebrate.
“(The fans) deserve it as much as anyone,” said Cavalry FC goalscorer Sergio Camargo. “They are were our twelfth man the whole season.”
