Cavalry FC, Calgary’s new professional soccer team, unveiled its first ever home and away kits at an event in Toronto Thursday night, alongside the other six Canadian Premier League founding member clubs

Cavalry FC’s home kit features a red shirt with a single diagonal white strip across the front, with black shorts and black socks. The design is inspired by the Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) regiment uniform, according to the club.

“The slash red jersey honours the regiment and is inspired by the regimental flag,” said the club via a statement Thrusday. “The colour is also a tribute to the great sporting culture within Calgary and Canada. On the back is a re-imagined “C” that is in the design.”

Design similar to a classic

Football kit aficionados will likely have already spotted similarities between Cavalry FC’s home shirt and the iconic home and away kits of the Peru national team. The 1978 Peru home kit, the inverse of Cavalry FC’s home shirt, is universally considered a classic and is often cited as one of the greatest kits of all time. The designers at Macron, the Italian sports clothing company that designed all the league’s new kits, will likely have had it in mind when developing Cavalry FC’s home shirt.

Cavalry FC’s away kit features a military-themed camouflaged green shirt, with white shorts and green socks.

“Inspired by the military aspect of Cavalry FC and Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) regiment, the design looks to the past and inspires a resilient future with this nod to our brave Canadian troops,” said the club via Thursday’s statement. “The camo print design is inspired by the Alberta Foothills and Rocky Mountains. The horseshoe on the back is a symbol of luck and fortune.”

Cavalry FC partners with WestJet

Thursday also saw Cavalry FC announce a partnership with Calgary-based airline WestJet, who will be a shirt sponsor.
