Match report: Bennett brace helps Montreal Roses sink Calgary Wild on bitter opening night

A sharp finisher thrives in chaos and on a night where wind, snow, and nerves swirled in equal measure, Elyse Bennett found clarity.

Her brace powered Montreal Roses FC to a 2-0 victory over Calgary Wild FC Saturday, spoiling the hosts’ spirited season opener in front of nearly 3,500 supporters at McMahon Stadium.

Calgary began like a team determined to write its own script.

Just 30 seconds in, Keelyn Stewart burst down the right flank, igniting an early scramble in the Montreal box. Minutes later, Kahli Johnson’s inviting delivery found Stewart again, but the effort lacked the power to truly test goalkeeper Anna Karpenko.

The Wild’s intent was unmistakable throughout the match as they pressed high, moved the ball quickly, and pinned Montreal back for long stretches of the opening half.

Stewart remained at the heart of it, forcing Karpenko again into a sharp save in the 11th minute after a clever buildup involving right back Grace Stordy.

Yet for all of Calgary’s momentum, it was Montreal who carried the sharper edge.

Early promise fades despite strong start

Bennett, who had already rattled the crossbar in the eighth minute with an audacious left-footed strike from a tight angle, delivered the breakthrough for Roses in the 37th minute.

Teammate Chloe Minas delivered a superb cross from the right and Bennett rose to guide a header past debutant goalkeeper Molly Race.

It was a clinical moment in a half where chances were otherwise hard earned.

“I don’t think the score writes the story of this game,” said Stordy. “I thought we came out really strong in the first half. That was a little glimpse of everything we’ve been working on in the preseason. I’m really proud of this team’s performance.”

Calgary’s control was evident in stretches with the home side registering multiple efforts on target and dictating tempo through midfield. Interim head coach Sinead McSharry saw enough to be encouraged even as the scoreline tilted against her side.

“In the first half, I was really impressed with the opportunities we had,” McSharry said. “It is unfortunate we couldn’t capitalize on them, but overall, I thought the first half was a demonstration of what we’ve been working on and what we are capable of as a team.”

Still, the game turned on efficiency and Montreal had it in abundance.

Bennett delivers decisive blow in the snow

As snow began to fall early in the second half, Montreal struck again with ruthless simplicity.

In the 49th minute, Megane Sauve’s perfectly weighted pass split the Calgary back line. Bennett timed her run to perfection and calmly slotted home with her left foot, doubling the lead and effectively seizing control of the contest.

From there, Calgary pushed to respond, but Karpenko stood firm. She denied Jorian Baucom with a diving save after another electric Stewart run and later turned away Michelle Romero following a slick one-two with captain Meggie Dougherty-Howard.

Montreal, meanwhile, threatened to extend their advantage. Lisa Pechersky came close after being picked out by Bennett while substitute Tanya Boychuck fired over from a promising position.

For Calgary, the effort never dipped because even in the closing stages, Johnson surged forward in a final attempt to pull one back. But the finish eluded them once more.

“In the second half I think things depleted in different ways,” McSharry said. “They started being more direct and we didn’t get enough pressure on the ball.”

Calgary can take some positives from this performance though. On a night shaped by the elements, the Wild showed enough to suggest brighter days ahead.

“The chances they got were the chances they scored, but I don’t think we gave them much else,” Stordy added. “This team has a goldfish mentality. We have a really good team. We can take the positive from this. We were all over them.”
