A 10-man Vancouver FC squad picked up their first home point of the season in a scrappy 1-1 draw against their BC rivals Pacific FC at Willoughby Community Park Stadium on Saturday.

Former Pacific FC defender Kunle Dada-Luke was sent off for VFC just six minutes after halftime,  leading to Nicolás Mezquida’s 17th minute strike being cancelled out by Pacific’s Aly Ndom’s well placed header in the 70th.

Mezquida opened the scoring in the Salish Sea Derby. After Terran Campbell collected a loose ball, he found the Uruguayan inside the box, and his shot found its way between the legs of a sliding defender and into the bottom corner of the goal.

Just after halftime, Dada-Luke was sent off for a post-whistle coming together with Pacific’s Sean Young near midfield – forcing VFC to play almost 40 minutes plus stoppage shorthanded.

Pacific finally found their breakthrough on a corner kick with 20 minutes to go. An outswinger from Marco Bustos found the head of Ndom at the corner of the six-yard box, and he powered it into the right side of the goal.

The visitors looked to snatch all three points late in the game, but a pair of terrific stops by Callum Irving ensured Vancouver would retain a share of the spoils.

The result sees Vancouver finish the day in sixth place in the Canadian Premier League table with two points from four matches, while Pacific sits fourth with four points.

Both teams hit the road next week, with Pacific taking on Atlético Ottawa on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT, followed by Vancouver facing Valour FC at 4 p.m. PT.
