Defending Canadian Premier League champions Cavalry FC announced the signing of forward Caniggia Elva Monday.

The 28-year-old St. Lucia international grew up in Calgary, playing for South West United before joining VfB Stuttgart in Germany at the age of 18 years.

Cavalry FC gain ‘intelligent, creative attacker’

And Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. hopes the experienced forward will bolster his club’s attack ahead of its 2024 CPL title defence.

“We are delighted to bring Caniggia home to Calgary,” said Wheeldon Jr., via a club statement Monday. “He is one of the best players to have come out of Calgary in recent years and has carved himself a very good career in Germany. Caniggia is an intelligent, creative attacker, with a great personality that will add another dimension to our attacking options.

“I am certain he will become another fan favourite as the season progresses.”

Elva joins Concacaf Champions Cup squad

Elva joins the Calgary club ahead of its two-legged 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup first round tie against Liga MX’s Pumas UNAM. Cavalry FC will host the first leg on Vancouver Island due to having no suitable winter venue closer to home.

Elva played for Stuttgart II, Würzburger Kickers, FC Ingolstadt and Rot-Weiß Erfurt during his time in Germany. He scored 25 goals in 184 appearances.

“Signing with Cavalry isn’t just a new chapter for me, it’s coming home,” said Elva, via the same statement. “I look forward to helping the team achieve all our goals this year and to being an asset in any way needed. I’m happy to be here and to help the club grow and can’t wait to play in front of such an incredible fanbase.”

Elva has made 12 appearances for St. Lucia, scoring five goals.
