Jonathan David scored in the 87th minute to give Canada a 2-1 win over Panama in an international friendly at BMO Field in Toronto Tuesday.
Cyle Larin had earlier given the home side the lead just before halftime. Jose Fajardo equalized for the visitors in the 69th minute.
Loading ...The game, sloppy and disjointed at times, looked set for a draw before David struck late. The LOSC Lille striker worked a crisp exchange with substitute Liam Millar before directing his winning effort past Panama keeper Orlando Mosquera.
“It was nice to see that when the game wasn’t so easy that we rose to the challenge,” said Canada coach Jesse Marsch after the game.
While officially a friendly, the win and resulting ranking points mean Marsch’s side has earned a preferable draw in the next round of the Concacaf Nations League. Canada will face Suriname in a two-legged quarterfinal in November.
