Top photos of 2021: Photographer Stuart Gradon – Cavalry FC, Canadian Premier League and Canada World Cup 2022 qualifiers

Cavalry FC’s 2021 season was decent, though not great.

The Calgary club finished second in the Canadian Premier League table, making the playoffs. But ultimately Tommy Wheeldon Jr.’s club fell short of their 2021 season targets.

First, they were eliminated from the Canadian Championship at home in the quarter finals by Pacific FC in August. And then they lost their CPL playoff semifinal match at home in November – Pacific FC, again, proving to be the Cavs’ nemesis.

However, it was a rewarding season of photographing Cavalry FC games at ATCO Field – even more so as there were no home games the previous year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

And my photo work this year wasn’t limited to only CPL action.

I shot Canada’s two important World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifier victories in Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium in November. First Canada beat Costa Rica 1-0 and then moved top of the Concacaf qualifying table with a 2-1 victory over Mexico.

The ‘Iceteca’ images include one of my favourites from 2021 – Tajon Buchanan’s almost-goal against Costa Rica.

Please enjoy some of my favourite pictures from 2021:
