Canada “not happy” with 1-1 draw with USA in 2022 World Cup qualifying

Canada claimed a well-earned 1-1 draw with the United States in World Cup 2022 qualifying in Nashville Sunday evening.

The draw and performance was a recovery of sorts for Canada, after Thursday’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Honduras at home in Toronto. And Canada’s coach John Herdman believes his team could, and perhaps should, have earned more than a draw.

Will Canada qualify for the 2022 World Cup?

“We’re not happy,” said Herdman after the game. “We want to come away when you have those chances with three points. The US brought their heart and spirit and we did too.”

Larin equalizes for Canada

Brenden Aaronson opened the scoring for the hosts in the 56th minute after a mistake by Canadian defender Scott Kennedy.

But Canada responded well and found the equalizer 62nd minute when Sam Adekugbe played through Alphonso Davies who burst into the United States’ penalty area before providing a tap-in for Canadian striker Cyle Larin.

And while both teams searched for a winner, it was Canada who perhaps carved out the better opportunities late on – with substitute Tajon Buchanan especially providing a spark on the right wing.

“We’re content but not happy,” said Herdman. “We had some moments to take three. Some games are there for the taking. That will keep us up at night.”
