The Canadian Premier League’s first and second placed teams produced a scoreless draw at ATCO Field in Calgary Wednesday.
It was a game of few clear cut chances and the result keeps league leaders Pacific FC ahead of Cavalry FC by one point in the standings.
But Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. was pleased with at least the clean sheet at home, especially considering his depleted squad.
“We’re unbeaten at home,” said Wheeldon Jr. after the match. “That’s a psychological advantage. People know how hard it is to come here. I think we left it all out there.
“When you look at reality, we have ten players missing from that starting eleven, it’s phenomenal the guile that these players (are playing with). We’re asking a lot of them on these tight turnarounds. And man, they delivered. We just missed that final punch, because we had them on the ropes.”
Cavalry FC defence stands tall
Cavalry FC’s Dutch defender Daan Klomp was proud of his teams defensive display at the league’s first place team.
“I think first half we struggled a little bit,” said Klomp. “Had to make some technical changes. But we picked it up a lot better. I think second half we dominated. Really, with the crowd behind us, they helped us through. It’s too bad we couldn’t score a goal.
“Credit to all the defenders on the team. Karifa (Yao) did a fucking perfect job, sorry for my language. And Davy (Norman Jr.) also. We were quite stable.”
Pacific FC satisfied with away draw
Pacific FC head coach was satisfied with the result despite believing his Victoria club should have taken an early lead.

“First half we had the best chances,” said Pa Modou Kah. “And second half was an even keel game. Overall 0-0 is a fair result. If we score first half it’s a different game. We didn’t take our chances.
“We just got to move forward. We have another game Monday, so the focus goes on to them. But also got to give credit to Calgary, because even with a depleted squad they fought to the last minute.”
